Claude Team plan vs ChatGPT Business: two open laptops side by side on a worn wooden table in a guest house back office, with a shared notebook, two mugs of coffee, a stack of folders and protea in a vase, in warm morning light.

The Claude Team plan and ChatGPT Business cost the same per seat at their US list prices, and both need at least two people. The difference is in what they're good at.

ChatGPT Business is the stronger choice for images, including the pictures in pitch decks. Claude Team includes Claude Design for layouts and one-pagers, and Claude Motion for short animations.

What neither team plan includes: the compliance tools built to log and audit what your staff paste in. Both companies keep those for Enterprise. And neither puts your team's scattered documents in one place. That part is the setup, and it matters more than which logo is on the seat.

A note on where this comes from. I use Claude for my own work, but I haven't run either team plan inside a company of my own. So every feature of the two plans below is checked against Anthropic's and OpenAI's own pages. Plans change monthly, so check the date before you buy.

Claude vs ChatGPT for business: which is better for what

Pick by the work your team does most, not by the price, because the price is the same.

Choose ChatGPT Business for images and creative work

ChatGPT is a lot more creative-oriented. If your team makes social graphics, mock-ups or pitch decks with pictures in them, it's significantly better at designing the imagery, because it has the strongest image model on the market right now. On the two public image rankings people vote on, Arena and Artificial Analysis, OpenAI's image models were at the top of both on 26 October 2026.

Choose Claude Team for layouts, animation and building on Claude

Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image tools do; Anthropic's own help page says so, and points to diagrams, charts and interactive visuals instead. The Team plan includes Claude Code, Claude Design for layouts and one-pagers, and Claude Motion. Claude also does really well at motion design: Claude Motion builds short animations from code, and code is how my own team edits video with Claude.

I use Claude because the memory model (files as memory, agents defined in folders) matches how I think about running a business. That's a preference, not a judgement.

If you're torn

If your team lives in visuals, start with ChatGPT. If you want layouts and animation built in, start with Claude. Both start at two seats, so you can try one with a small group before you buy for everyone.

Who sees what your team pastes in?

This is the question I'd ask before buying a single seat. On a team plan, your people can paste anything into a chat: a client's ID number, a guest's medical note, a supplier's contract. Or they can use it for their personal shopping lists. The compliance tools built to log and audit all of it are Enterprise only, on both.

On Claude Team, Anthropic's help pages describe no screen where an owner reads members' chats. Owners see usage numbers per person, not what was asked.

The one way in is an export: the Primary Owner, the single top account holder, can export the whole organisation's conversations, incognito chats included. Audit logs and Anthropic's Compliance API are Enterprise only.

On ChatGPT Business, OpenAI's own pages don't say the same thing. Its help centre, updated this month, says admins and owners "cannot see all private member chats" by default, though owners can export a member's data. Its privacy page, from January 2026, says Business admins can view, export and delete members' conversations, and its notice to managed accounts says an administrator may be able to access, export and audit them.

If this matters to you, get the answer from OpenAI in writing before you rely on it. Its Compliance API, which feeds conversation logs to audit tools, is Enterprise only.

In South Africa, your business stays responsible under POPIA for the personal information it holds, wherever your staff paste it. POPIA limits sending personal information out of the country, and both companies keep data in the US. Health details are special personal information under the Act. This isn't legal advice: if your team handles client or guest details, set a clear rule on what never goes into an AI chat, and check it with your attorney.

When a team plan isn't enough

If you're a larger team, or you handle sensitive information, the next step up is each company's Enterprise plan. Claude Enterprise adds audit logs, the Compliance API, custom roles, custom retention and a HIPAA option; Anthropic lists it at $20 a seat a month, billed yearly, with at least 20 seats, plus usage billed on top.

ChatGPT Enterprise adds the Compliance API, data residency in ten regions (none in Africa), custom retention and a HIPAA option; OpenAI doesn't publish its price.

Where is your team's knowledge?

Here's the other thing no plan fixes. In a lot of companies, each person writes their own documents, and those documents live on their own laptop or their own corner of a drive, not in one central place. The price list is in one inbox, the house rules in someone's downloads, the latest proposal on a desktop. When everyone starts using AI, each person's AI only knows what that person feeds it.

The fix is one central knowledge base: the business written down once, in one place your whole team's AI reads from.

Both plans help. On Claude Team, an owner can give skills and plugins to everyone at once, and people can share projects. On ChatGPT Business, an admin can install skills and plugins for the whole workspace, and people can share projects. Both connect to SharePoint, OneDrive and Google Drive, and read files where they already sit, with each person's own permissions.

The newer way is MCP, the Model Context Protocol: an open standard that lets an AI plug into an outside system. Through MCP, Claude or ChatGPT can read from, and where you allow it write to, a secure central store, so your instructions, skill files and documents live in one place instead of on each person's computer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Claude Team plan worth it?

If two or more people use Claude for work, yes: you get shared projects, skills an owner can give everyone, connectors to your tools, and no training on your data, for the same $25 a seat as ChatGPT Business at US list prices. Anthropic itself suggests Pro for one person and Team for a business with more than one.

Can a ChatGPT Business admin see my chats?

OpenAI's pages disagree. Its help centre says admins can't see all private member chats by default, though owners can export a member's data; its January 2026 privacy page says Business admins can view and export conversations. Assume your employer can, and ask OpenAI for the exact answer for your workspace.

Does Claude or ChatGPT train on our company data?

Not by default, on either company's team plans. Anthropic keeps feedback you deliberately send, like a thumbs up or down, for up to five years. OpenAI only uses data you've opted in to share.

Which is better for images, Claude or ChatGPT?

ChatGPT. Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image tools do, while OpenAI's image models led both public image rankings on 26 October 2026. Claude's strength on the visual side is code-built animation, with Claude Motion.

Can we start a team plan with just two people?

Yes. Both the Claude Team plan and ChatGPT Business start at two seats, and you can mix standard and premium seats. If you'd like help choosing, or want it set up so your team's knowledge is in one place from day one, book a call.

The takeaway

The seat is the cheap part. Claude Team and ChatGPT Business cost the same at their US list prices, and the choice comes down to how your team works: ChatGPT if your team lives in images, Claude if you want layouts and animation built in.

What decides whether it pays off is the setup: one place for your business's knowledge, and your tools connected properly. If you'd like that set up for your team, here's what Growth includes. If you need to audit how AI is used, that's Enterprise, or our partner: book a call. Or read which part of Claude does what first.
